![]() The reason for this is the same as on the Trek Slash, air shock technology is now at a point where the floater isn’t needed, in return for ditching it you can stiffen up the frame and reduce the weight. Geometry wise, the 29er is slightly slacker and a bit shorter, but really you’re splitting hairs, they’re pretty comparable.Īs for the changes that apply to both wheel sizes, the Full Floater link is gone, to be replaced with a fixed lower shock mount and trunion mounts up top. For now, we see 180-190mm bikes being the benchmark for 29ers in downhill, with the rollover of the bigger wheels, any more simply isn’t needed. The sleek lines and tidiness that have always been a hallmark of Session bikes returns, although it’s been reduced to 190mm travel. The thing that does matter is this is now the first production, carbon 29er downhill bike, and nobody can take that away. If you believe their graphs then it’s all very clever stuff, however we’re going to wait until it’s trail tested until we start heaping on praise. Trek are using a new lay-up that they reckon increases stiffness while reducing weight. So, what are we looking at with the Session 29. ![]() Perhaps even more significant is that through all their testing, Trek found no areas where 650b was faster than 29 inch – tight turns, jumps, you name it – at best, they were on par. Well, we say every millisecond, but Trek’s own test put it at up to three seconds per minute faster – that’s scarily significant. ![]() They estimate only 10 per cent of Sessions they sell will be on the big wheels for so-called “early adopters” – for the rest of the “traditionalists”, there are also a wave of changes on the 27.5 model.īasically, for those that count every millisecond, go for 29, for those that want a ride that’s a bit less intense, then go for the revised Session. ![]() This is a bike for racers – Trek have no pretentions of taking over the market with this. After eight years of development, this isn’t simply a bodged together Frankenstein bike, or a raw aluminium prototype, but a fully fledged, ready for market, carbon model. Already spied at the Fort William BDS, this is the long awaited production version of the Trek Session 29er. ![]()
